Octonauts - Polar Adventures from Abbey Home Media

The Octonauts are a team of adventurers who are always on hand to help sea creatures as well as exploring underwater worlds - this means that the DVDs are full of opportunities for children to learn about sealife and the importance of looking after it. They live on board the Octopod but when it goes in for repair, Peso sets off on holiday to the frozen Arctic; a good way to introduce a new habitat. Then they are off to the Antarctic to save sea stars and sea urchins. As well as these two great adventures, there are three more episodes - Adelie Penguins, Bowhead Whale and Saltwater Crocidile. There's always plenty of excitement, but alongside this, children will be absorbing lots of knowledge. Explore - Rescue - Protect is the motto of the Octonauts, whi are lively and likeable characters, with very individual voices that are easy to identify and clear to hear. With bright graphics and plenty of action, children will thoroughly enjoy this DVD. Published 29/08/16.

Masha and The Bear - Hide and Seek from Abbey Home Media

Masha and the Bear is based in the traditional Russian children's folk story of the same name. The stories tell of the adventures of a little girl named Masha and a fatherly bear who always keeps her out of trouble. Masha and the Bear have a lovely relationship, which is depicted excellently in these stories which have a strong moral theme and focus on the importance of friendship and helping others. The quality of the animation is excellent, and the sound quality good for little ones - the series really appeals to young children, with its short episodes that really capture the attention. There are eight stories to enjoy in this DVD, with a running time of just over an hour. Masha is a cute character who means well, but she needs the father-figure of Bear to help her out of scrapes - which he does, of course. A very enjoyable series. Publication date 19/09/16.

Topsy & Tim - Birthday Party from Abbey Home Media

The irresistible twins are back with six more lively adventures. The pair share that special bond that twins have and they always have fun together, enjoying the everyday activities that will be familiar to all young children. The episodes on this DVD are Birthday Party, Broken Vase, Special Cake, Our Teeth, Wheelchair Exercises and Wiggle's Trip. In the title story, Topsy and Tim are 5, and there's a wonderful surprise in store, as well as all the excitement of a party with their friends. The graphics are good, the scenes well-shot and the audio is clear and distinctive for children. The everyday situations are easy for children to relate to their own experiences and I was pleased to see the inclusion of 'Wheelchair exercises'. Topsy and Tim are perennial favourites and the DVDs are really true to Jean and Gareth Adamson's original vision. Release date 4/7/16.

Masha's Tales - Mixed Up Stories from Abbey Home Media

Masha is a smart and cheeky girl who loves to tell stories - and especially, she loves to retell well-known tales. The stories delve into her unique mind as her (and every child's) favourite stories are re-imagined with Masha's own unique vision, as she regales her toys with the tales. Episodes include Three Little Pigs, Tom Thumb, The Valiant Little Tailor, Ali Baba, Caliph Stork, Cinderella, Father Frost, The Fox & The Rabbit, Jack & The Beanstalk, Red Riding Hood, The Frog Princess, The Golden Cockerel, The Magic Swan Geese. The short episodes are perfect for small children. The tales might be slightly mixed-up but this only adds to their child-appeal; the visuals are great and the backgrounds lovely; Masha's voice is spot-on for the character and I love the way she interacts with the stories. The cartoon format of the stories will appeal to young ones, and the bright colours are most appealing. Release date 11/7/16. Also available is Masha And The Bear - How They Met - OFFICIAL UK VERSION [DVD] ; A big thank you to Abbey Home Media for sending these DVDs.

His adventures this time include crabbing in rock pools, making new friends at the seal sanctuary and creating sock puppets for a show - and on the way, children will love to spot other favourite Milkshake characters. I found this one of the more enjoyable DVDs I have watched as there is enough there to engage adults too - and there will be lots of questions to answer from your young one. There are plenty of humorous moments too. An excellent DVD with lots of learning value, which certainly held my young tester's attention.

The Little Red Tractor Lives at Charming Gosling Farm with his owner Stan and other farmyard people, animals and machines. The Little Red Tractor is not as big or as powerful as the other machines, but he works hard to earn his place around the farm. Watching his adventures is a good way for children to learn that size doesn't mean everything - being determined and resourceful is just as important - and the most important thing is to be like the little tractor, who is always there for his friends. The stories are varied, with lots of action, appealing characters and a lovely setting. It's a good way to introduce young children to what happens on the farm too.

Boj - Blast off Buddies

Boj is a marsupial from the Australian Outback and he has become a much-loved CBeebies favourite. He's a helpful creature who loves to help his friends and neighbours and he has plenty of creative Boj-a-boom ideas to make stuff from other stuff. The themes of friendship and working together are a good lesson for young ones, who will pick up on the message as they enjoy the colourful episodes. The episodes are fun and lively with plenty of creative ideas incorporated with the story. The ten episodes, which offer nearly two hours of captivating fun are Blast Off Buddies; Hoppy Birthday; Flat as a Pancake; Carry On Carrot; Giggly Park Rescue Squad; The Giggly Dig; Denzil's Lost Teddy; Boj the Collector; Sneezy Snufferoos and Keep On Going. The pack includes a good sized colourful alphabet poster, ideal to put on display to reinforce learning. There are also three episodes from the Sooty TV series, as well as printable worksheets making this DVD excellent value for money. Mr. Bloom's Nursery - Giant Turnip and other episodes by Ben Faulks

Mr Bloom is a singing gardener so expect plenty of catchy music. The combination of live action and puppets captures children's attention and there's 90 minutes of fun with 4 episodes - Giant Turnip; Music; Worms ( a great way to help children learn about composting) and Underground. Grizzly Tales For Gruesome Kids: Nuclear Wart from Abbey Home Media

The Grizzly Tales for Gruesome Kids TV series was based on a series of cautionary tales by Jamie Rix.This DVD is a collection of morality tales in which naughty children are taught a lesson, often in a rather grim way - hence the 'grizzly' and 'gruesome' in the title. There are 11 stories here and I am sure that most children will identify - or their parents will identify them with - at least one or two of the wickedly but accurately drawn characters. It's colourful and contemporary and children will love it! Good value too, with over two hours play time.
